About this work
A frontispiece combines a faint, ghost-like pencil profile on the left with an intensely worked half-face on the right: a single wide staring eye, furrowed brow, sharp nose and parted lips rendered in dense crosshatched ink. Between them, Cyrillic lettering announces the print cycle's title, author, and place and year of publication.
Muted washes of ochre, grey-green and rust surround scattered brown ink blots, while the face is built from tight black cross-hatching that leaves the rest of the sheet pale and unfinished-looking. The contrast between faint sketch and dense linework gives the plate a watchful, unsettling presence.
