About this work
An elaborate Gothic tower dominates the composition, its tall spire topped by a cross and flanked by pinnacles, rising against turbulent swirling clouds. Below the spire, a tiered arcade holds ranks of robed figures in gothic niches, and at the tower's base a pointed archway shelters a small nativity group -- a seated woman with a child and attendant figures -- watched by huddled onlookers at the threshold.
Rendered entirely in fine engraved line, the print builds its stone textures and turbulent sky from dense cross-hatching and swirling strokes, leaving the architecture pale against the darker, agitated background. The tight, meticulous linework gives the tower a carved, almost sculptural weight, and the storm-like sky lends the scene a brooding, otherworldly charge.
