About this work
A curved stone bridge with a balustrade of urn-topped posts and iron railings spans a narrow canal, its dark arch reflected in the black water below. Along the embankment, tall multi-story apartment buildings with arched windows and decorative cornices recede into the distance under a night sky lit by a pale moon.
Rendered entirely in fine engraved lines, the print builds its nocturnal depth through dense cross-hatching that turns the sky and water almost solid black, leaving the carved stonework and window frames picked out in delicate white strokes. The meticulous linear technique and stark tonal contrast give the empty street a hushed, melancholic quiet.
