Flashlight

A spiral staircase dominates a shadowed interior: its heavily carved wooden banister, worked with swirling scrollwork, curves down from an upper landing where a glowing lamp shade and a wrought-iron balcony rail catch the light. Beyond the stairwell a doorway opens onto a further room, while a rounded vessel sits in the foreground shadow.

Rendered in dense, directional pencil hatching typical of lithographic printmaking, the sheet is built almost entirely from near-black tone, against which the lamp, railing, and banister emerge in sharp white highlights. The extreme contrast and tightly worked texture give the print a brooding, theatrical quality, as if a single beam of light were cutting through the dark stairwell.
