Brownie

A squat, densely furred creature crouches on clawed, sinewy legs, its shaggy mane rendered in swirling curled lines. The wrinkled face has wide staring eyes, pointed ears, whiskers and an open mouth baring teeth. Small tufts of grass and fungi grow at its feet in the surrounding dark.

Worked entirely in black ink line, the etching builds volume through dense cross-hatching and looping contours that mimic matted fur. Strong contrast between the pale figure and near-black ground, and the obsessive linework, give the image a meticulous, unsettling, folkloric presence.
