About this work

A hairy, gnome-like woodland creature with a long tangled beard and wild hair blending into gnarled bark fills the frame, one clawed hand raised beside its face and the other gripping a rough wooden staff. Grasses, moss and small mushrooms crowd the foreground while a knot of exposed roots frames the head.

Executed as a black-and-white etching, dense cross-hatching and fine parallel lines build every texture - fur, bark, foliage - into a rich tonal range from bright highlights to near-solid black. The meticulous linework and staring eyes give the forest spirit an intense, watchful, uncanny presence.
