About this work
A tightly packed group of distorted, staring faces fills the lower portion of the print, mouths open and eyes wide as if crying out; above them looms a stack of onion-domed towers and classical columns bound in netting-like texture. To the right, an elongated face with a similarly webbed surface merges into the architecture, blurring the line between figure and structure.
Worked entirely in black ink line, the woodcut builds every form from dense parallel and cross hatching, leaving almost no flat black or white area. The nervous, restless texture and the tight cropping of overlapping heads and towers create a claustrophobic, unsettling atmosphere typical of graphic printmaking.
