About this work
A huge bowed head and shoulders of an elderly bearded man dominate the left side of the sheet, eyes lowered in thought. In the upper corner a six-pointed star radiates light over a dim, sloping landscape, while at right two much smaller robed figures, one stooped and one carrying a bundle, move together across the open ground.
The dramatic shift in scale between the giant profile and the distant travelers is built entirely from dense crosshatching and scratched white highlights around the star. Rough, grainy crayon texture and deep black grounds give the scene a brooding, meditative stillness.
