About this work
Two half-length figures occupy the foreground: a young woman wearing a draped, fringed headscarf, large hoop earrings and layered necklaces looks past the viewer, while beside her a bald man bows his head, one hand raised near his chest. Behind them a cluster of flat-roofed houses climbs a slope under a night sky with a few visible stars.
Fine crosshatching builds the woman's jewelry and hair in careful detail, set against looser, scratchy strokes describing the rooftops and sky. The contrast between her lit, adorned face and the man's shadowed, downcast one suggests an unspoken exchange, and the coarse lithographic texture gives the scene a brooding stillness.
