About this work
A stone or iron bridge curves from the lower left toward a cluster of tall buildings and church-like domes on the horizon, with bare trees and a lamppost lining the near bank. A slender post or lamp rises from the crown of the arch, silhouetted against the paler sky. The river beneath is rendered as a dense tangle of curved lines suggesting moving or icy water.
Worked in a mixed technique of pastel and scratched, incised lines, the composition builds its forms from overlapping crosshatching in crimson, violet, teal and ochre rather than solid color fields. The etched marks give the surface a restless, vibrating texture, and the hazy, warm-lit sky behind the domes creates a hushed, wintry atmosphere.
