About this work
A bearded sea god crowned with a trident embraces a nude woman with wind-blown hair reclining across his lap on the coiled shell of a giant sea creature. Behind them a winged infant rides a leaping dolphin with arms raised, while a small horned sea-monster swims through choppy waves at lower right.
Dense fine crosshatching in black ink on cream paper builds deep tonal contrast, describing muscled flesh, scaled skin and curling waves with meticulous linear precision. The etched surface has no color, only graphic line and shadow, giving the mythological scene a dark, dramatic, theatrical intensity.
