About this work
Two rough studies share the sheet. On the right, a heavyset nude man stands with his back to the viewer, wrists bound and arms raised overhead, while a clothed figure beside him adjusts the rope. On the left, a horse with a flowing mane rears above a crouching, booted figure, with the faint ghost outline of a standing nude sketched between the two groups.
Rendered in quick, scratchy pen lines on bare toned paper, the studies are left loose and unresolved, with only the central figures fully worked. The sparse, nervous linework and empty surrounding space lend the sheet a tense, unfinished atmosphere fitting its ominous title.
