About this work
A gaunt, skeletal rider grips a long-handled scythe while seated on a bony horse that picks its way over rubble and dark mounds in the foreground. To the right, a shadowed multi-story building shows lit windows against the night, with crates and scaffolding stacked beside it; a radiant sunburst and streaked clouds fill the sky behind the horse and rider.
Dense cross-hatching and fine linear strokes build the dark foreground and architecture, while the sky stays more open, washed with warm orange, yellow and blue tones reading as a burning sunset. The etched texture and stark contrast between the black silhouette of horse and rider and the glowing sky give the print a bleak, apocalyptic charge.
