About this work
A wooden yoke bar crosses the back of a bull straining along a shore, head lowered and mouth open. Behind it, two powerful nude men press forward: the nearer grips a coiled serpent close to the ground, the farther, bull-horned, raises both arms overhead holding the snake's tail against a low sun breaking through banked clouds over a calm sea.
Dense parallel hatching builds deep blacks across the animal's flank and the men's straining muscles, while incised lines radiate outward from the hidden sun. The high-contrast etching sets heavy shadow against bare paper, and the diagonal sweep of bull and figures along the shore gives the scene a charged, dramatic momentum.
