About this work
In the foreground a rider in period dress sits astride a rearing horse on a hillside, raising a saber overhead. Behind and above him looms a vastly oversized horse's head and neck, its mane and body filled with ranks of tiny mounted soldiers and a crested emblem; further figures, including a winged one, cluster at the lower left. A banner with cyrillic lettering runs along the foot of the sheet.
Executed entirely in black ink on paper, the etching relies on dense fine hatching and stippling to build deep tonal contrast between the dark sky and pale ground. The diagonal thrust of horse and rider, set against the towering silhouette above, gives the print a charged, heroic energy.
