Fine, even hatching renders the seated woman's flesh smoothly against the heavier, near-black drapery and foliage around her, drawing the eye to her anguished expression. The distant, quietly rendered ship and open water introduce a note of loss into the otherwise densely worked scene, giving the etching a melancholic, elegiac quality.
