About this work

Several boats, wrapped tightly in ropes and heavy canvas tarpaulins, stand propped on wooden supports and wheeled trailers in an open boatyard; ropes crisscross the humped covers, a ladder leans against one hull, and smaller covered craft recede toward the horizon under a turbulent sky.

Rendered entirely in dense pen-and-ink hatching, the etching builds volume through crosshatched lines rather than color, giving the tarpaulins a heavy, almost sculptural weight against the loosely scratched sky. The composition's low horizon and repeated wheel and rope motifs create a still, slightly melancholic mood of vessels waiting out of season.
