About this work
A bell-shaped opening frames a cobblestone street where a bearded man in a broad hat and long coat stands between an elderly woman and a boy leading a horse with a laden basket. Behind them a market scene unfolds, with a horse-drawn cart, a scale-holder weighing goods, and low wooden shops, while the arched upper register opens onto a tram, a church topped with a star, and rooftops beyond.
The etching is worked in fine, dense linework, contrasting velvety black shadow in the foreground with lighter hatching in the distant townscape above. The curved framing collapses near and far into one continuous view, giving the scene of a Jewish quarter a hushed, contemplative pull toward the skyline overhead.
