About this work
In the foreground two large heads overlap: a turbaned, bearded man and a woman with her hand raised pensively to her chin, both gazing off in silence. Behind them a lone hooded elder stands with head bowed, and further back on a path two smaller figures walk together, one carrying a bundle.
Coarse, grainy crayon strokes and heavy stippling model the faces out of near-black shadow into sharp lit planes, while the distant path figures are drawn in finer, looser line. The layered depth from foreground heads to background walkers lends the scene a quiet, melancholic weight.
