About this work
An emaciated elderly man fills the foreground, his open robe exposing a starved torso, protruding ribs and withered arms as he bends forward in a labored, shuffling step. His bearded face tilts back, eyes closed, mouth slightly open. Behind him, two women in headscarves stand pressed together, one leaning against the other, watching in silence.
Sharp lithographic hatching models every hollow of the man's anatomy, throwing his lit, papery skin into relief against the near-black ground. The women behind him are drawn more softly, their faces half-shadowed. The unflinching rendering of the wasted body gives the print a raw, mournful weight.
