About this work
A standing figure in flowing robes occupies a niche formed by roughly hewn stone walls beneath a broken stairway, gazing forward into the distance. Filling the foreground at much larger scale, a bowed, partly draped figure lies face-down with his head pressed into clasped hands, in a pose of anguish or prayer, seemingly unseen by the distant standing figure.
Heavy black crayon strokes model the rough masonry and the reclining figure's musculature, with sharp contrast between flooded dark stonework and pale lit forms. The scale disparity between the two figures and the somber, penitential pose of the foreground man give the scene a heavy, mournful weight.
