About this work
A carved wooden ship's stern, ribbed and roped, runs down the center of the sheet, splitting it in two. On the left, in black and white, a snowy village and bare trees sit above a grey fish tangled among ropes and a nest with an egg. On the right, the same hull rises against a red sky and sun, above a red carp and a distant skyline of towers and junks on swirling water.
Dense linework and fine hatching render every plank, rope and roof with graphic, woodcut-like precision. The left half stays in ink black, white and grey; the right is saturated in a single vivid red, so the two sides read as contrasting worlds joined only by the hull, an effect that feels meticulous and quietly dramatic.
