About this work
The crumbling stone walls and a squat tower of an old ruin rise among boulders and slender poplar and cypress-like trees on a grassy hillside. In the lower right a single reddish-brown cow grazes near a low stone wall, small against the broken masonry and scattered rocks that dominate the middle ground.
A pale, cloud-heavy sky in cool blue-grey tones fills much of the composition, its diffused light softening the contours of stone and foliage below. Dense, textured strokes of green and ochre build the vegetation and rock, while the muted, overcast palette gives the ruin a quiet, faintly wistful stillness.
