About this work

A tall ochre-brick building with rows of windows stands at left, its facade partly veiled in mist; the blue dome of a distant cathedral, marked with small gilded stars, emerges faintly at right beside bare trees, while a low fence and snow-covered ground stretch across the foreground under a heavy grey sky.

Muted ochre, grey and pale blue tones are laid in broad, soft-edged strokes that blur the architecture into the winter haze; the diffused light and thick atmospheric fog create a hushed, melancholic mood typical of a damp northern winter day.
