About this work
A pale wooden building with a peaked roof and shuttered windows fills the middle ground, its wall marked by a ladder leaning against it and a red-railed staircase to the right. A thick, leafless tree trunk rises in the foreground against drifts of snow, while a single small figure walks along a cleared path in the distance.
The palette is almost monochrome, built from soft greys, off-whites and pale ochre, with only the dark tree trunk and rust-red railings breaking the haze. Thin, subdued brushwork and flattened light evoke an overcast winter day, producing a still, muted mood.
