About this work
A narrow canal recedes toward a tall campanile shrouded in haze, spanned by a low arched bridge with weathered brown railings. A black gondola with blue upholstery is moored among mooring poles in the foreground water, while a lone pedestrian in a red coat walks along the stone quay to the right, past wooden scaffolding and a dark kiosk.
The palette is muted and atmospheric, built from soft grays, dusty pinks and pale greens that suggest overcast, humid air typical of Venice. Brushwork is fluid and loosely descriptive, with buildings and the tower dissolving softly into the misty sky, while the water is rendered in cool, rippled greens and grays. The overall impression is quiet, damp and softly melancholic.
