About this work
A low green hill topped with a cluster of trees sits at the center of a wide, calm river or lake that mirrors the overcast sky; the far bank recedes into a hazy grey horizon, and a small wooden boat is tied at a low jetty in the lower right corner. Wet, dark foreground grasses and reeds frame the reflection in the still water.
Painted in oil with a subdued palette of greys, olive greens and muted whites, the sky and water are built from soft, blended clouds of pigment while the tree line and grasses carry looser, textured strokes; the damp light and quiet, mirror-like water give the scene a hushed, melancholic calm typical of weather just after rain.
