About this work
A long wooden staircase flanked by white railings climbs from the grassy foreground up to a dark red house with a pale green roof, framed by bare and golden birch trunks. Scattered fallen leaves cover the steps and lawn, and warm light glows from two of the house's windows and the entrance porch, while dusk settles over the surrounding trees.
The palette is dominated by muted plum, grey and ochre, with birch trunks left as pale vertical accents against a hazy backdrop of dark fir. Brushwork is loose and atmospheric, softening distant trees into a mist-like screen while the stairs and house are drawn with firmer strokes. The lit windows lend a quiet, melancholic sense of autumn dusk.
