About this work
Seen from an elevated viewpoint, a row of city buildings and a stone embankment wall run along the left side above a wide river, its surface covered in melting ice and pale floes drifting downstream. A road with several cars follows the embankment past a small pier or landing structure, while hazy silhouettes of towers appear on the far bank.
The palette is composed almost entirely of soft grays, whites and pale blues, capturing the flat, diffused light of a thawing winter day. Loose, dragged brushstrokes describe the textures of snow, ice and stone with economy, producing a quiet, subdued mood of seasonal transition.
