About this work
A meandering channel of still water threads through dense golden-brown reeds and grasses that fill most of the canvas, leading the eye back to a low band of dark, bare trees and a pale overcast sky. The reeds crowd both banks in thick, upright stands, their dried stalks catching pale highlights, while the water lies flat and reflective in the foreground.
The palette moves from warm ochres and straw-yellow in the grasses to cool greys and blue-greys in the sky and distant tree line, unified by soft, hazy light. Fine, dry brushstrokes and flecks of white build the texture of individual stalks, while the water and sky are handled more smoothly, creating a quiet, still, slightly melancholic winter mood.
