About this work
A light-toned road or waterway runs from the lower edge of the canvas straight back to a glowing horizon, flanked by muted green and ochre fields. Bare, wintry shrubs and thin trees stand in the right foreground, and a low building with a few lit windows appears in the middle distance to the right.
The palette is soft and desaturated, built from greys, dusty pink, sage green, and pale lilac, with sky and pathway painted in nearly the same tonality so they merge at the horizon. Brushwork is dry and loose, the canvas texture left visible; the overall feeling is quiet, subdued, and melancholic.
