About this work
Large chunks of pale ice float down a wide river through the middle of the city, flowing past stone embankments toward the viewer. A continuous row of multi-story buildings in ochre, pink and grey lines both banks, fronted by bare trees, with a line of parked vehicles visible along the left quay under a heavily clouded sky.
Cool greys, muted pinks and pale blues dominate the palette, applied in thick, choppy strokes that give the breaking ice a rough, textured surface. Soft, diffused light under the overcast sky flattens the color into a subdued harmony, and the loose handling of water, ice and facades creates a raw, damp early-spring chill.
