About this work

An elevated view looks across the Seine toward the twin towers of a Gothic cathedral rising through haze on the far bank, with a stone arched bridge spanning the water and a dark barge moored along the embankment. In the immediate foreground a wrought-iron balcony railing crosses the canvas, holding a terracotta pot of pink and white blossoms that anchor the composition.

Cool greys, blue-greens and dove-white dominate a palette softened by rain, with only the flowers offering a warm accent of pink. Paint is applied in broad, wet-on-wet strokes that blur architecture and sky into one another, giving the whole scene a hazy, atmospheric impressionist quality and a quiet, damp calm.
