About this work
Rows of empty turquoise chairs and round tables cover the wet paving of Piazza San Marco, receding toward the Basilica's domes and arcades half-veiled in haze. Small figures under open umbrellas move along the colonnade, their reflections doubled on the rain-glazed stone.
Muted greys, ochres and soft greens dissolve the architecture into a hazy backdrop, while loose, confident strokes define the foreground furniture and its turquoise accents. Broad translucent passages of paint capture the sheen of standing water, giving the square a quiet, freshly washed atmosphere.
