About this work

A slender bare branch cuts diagonally across a dense tangle of thin trunks and twigs. At the center a narrow stream reflects the overhanging growth, its surface breaking into pale highlights and a warm rust-orange passage. A tree trunk anchors the right edge, and dense speckled undergrowth covers the ground and branches throughout.

Rendered almost entirely in greys, whites and blacks with a single warm ochre accent in the water, the paint is built up in dense, scratchy strokes and flicked highlights that turn the branches into texture more than description. The effect is hushed and melancholic, closer to a study of surface and light than to detail.
