About this work
A gnarled, wind-twisted tree dominates the left of the composition, its bare and tangled branches silhouetted against a soft, hazy sky. Thinner bare saplings rise to the right, while the low, marshy foreground is broken by a band of turquoise water reflecting fragments of the scene above.
Built up with dense, scraped impasto, the surface mixes ochre, moss green, charcoal and dove grey into a rough, weathered texture that suggests damp, blustery air. The pale ground fades into fog at the top of the canvas, leaving the tree as the sole dark, restless shape against the stillness, giving the scene an unsettled, wintry mood.
