About this work
Heavy, rounded mounds of melting snow, pitted and uneven, dominate a close forest clearing, giving way at their base to patches of exposed brown earth and dark meltwater. Bare, dark tree trunks rise behind them against a pale backdrop, with no sky or open ground shown.
Thick, sculptural strokes of white, grey-blue and lilac build the snow's uneven surface, while dark vertical strokes of maroon and brown form the tree trunks. Touches of ochre mark the thawing earth beneath, giving the scene a raw, damp stillness of late winter.
