About this work
Two facing rows of slender birch trunks, their bark broken into black-and-white patches, frame a grassy path that narrows toward a pale opening where a distant pond glimmers through the foliage. The canopy overhead is dense with autumn leaves in mauve, rust, and lilac tones, while a heavy, cloud-streaked sky presses down above the treeline.
The palette favors unusual violet and pink hues for the foliage against near-black storm clouds, built up with thick, visible brushstrokes that flatten the leaf masses into rhythmic patches of color. Loose, gestural handling of the sky and grass gives the scene an atmospheric, wind-swept quality, evoking the damp chill of a late autumn afternoon.
