About this work
A rutted dirt track curves uphill through a small village, flanked by birches turning gold and rust and by weathered log houses with dark plank roofs. Low hills and pale mountains close the view in the distance, while unmown grass and scrub fill the foreground on both sides of the path.
Muted greens, ochres and browns dominate under a soft grey-white sky, with touches of orange and yellow marking the turning leaves. Thick, textured brushwork and a slightly overcast light give the scene a quiet, melancholic hush typical of a late-autumn afternoon in the countryside.
