About this work

A stream runs in a converging V from the middle distance toward the viewer, its banks dense with thin bare trunks and speckled undergrowth. An arched branch bows over the water at upper left while darker thickets close in on both sides. The stream's center carries a ribbon of golden-ochre current flanked by pale, rippled reflections.

Painted in a tight range of greys and blacks broken only by the warm gold of the water, the surface is worked in dense textured strokes and dabbed white highlights that flatten the woodland into pattern. The mood is quiet and melancholic, an austere hush settled over the moving water.
