About this work
A dark, narrow boat rests near the embankment of a canal that curves past rows of houses toward a low stone bridge. Trees heavy with yellow-orange foliage line both banks, their branches arching over an iron-railed embankment where a single figure walks beneath the canopy.
Muted golds, olive greens and soft greys fill the canvas, reflected in quiet ripples on the water's surface under an overcast, pearly sky. Loose, dabbed brushwork builds the foliage into a warm mass of color, giving the scene a subdued, melancholic autumn calm.
