About this work
Several gondolas are moored along a Venetian canal, their curved black prows rising against a hazy waterfront. The central boat faces the viewer directly, flanked by others receding into the mist, with mooring poles and a faint row of buildings dissolving in the distance.
The scene is built from thick, dragged strokes of warm grey, rose and ochre, with cool teal-green in the shadowed water. Loose, scumbled brushwork blurs architectural detail into a soft haze, letting the dark hulls anchor the composition. The muted, sun-bleached palette gives the canal a quiet, melancholic hush.
