About this work
A narrow, dilapidated plank walkway zigzags across shallow water toward a low wooden boathouse or bathhouse structure partly submerged near the center of the composition. Dry reeds and grasses line both banks in the foreground, and a dense line of trees in autumn color, some still green, borders the far shore, all mirrored in the glassy, still water.
The palette is cool and subdued, dominated by silvery blue-grays in the water and sky, set against pockets of ochre, rust and gold in the autumn foliage. Brushwork is loose and textured, with the reflections built from soft vertical strokes that blur the line between water and shore. The mood is quiet and still, with a slightly melancholic, damp autumn atmosphere.
