About this work
A long, low row of market buildings with striped awnings and shuttered stalls runs across the wide canvas, punctuated by a taller gabled structure at its center and glimpses of onion domes and towers further back. The foreground pavement is bare and pale, suggesting an empty square at the end of the day.
Violet and mauve dominate the sky and shadowed walls, broken by warm ochre and rose highlights where evening light catches the facades. Loose, blurred brushwork and soft edges dissolve architectural detail into atmosphere, giving the empty market square a hushed, melancholic calm.
