About this work

A minimal river landscape reduces to broad tonal masses: a pale grey-lavender sky fills the upper two-thirds, streaked by one pale cloud curling at the top right, while a dark blue-black mass along the lower edge reads as the river's bank or still water, a small ember of orange glowing at the left.

Built almost entirely from smeared, dry-brushed strokes of grey, lilac and slate blue, the paint is dragged and scraped across the canvas, leaving raw texture and thin passages of bare ground. Light is diffuse and overcast, giving a quiet, muted feel closer to a tonal mood study than a descriptive view.
