About this work
The entire canvas is covered in golden-brown impasto, built up and then scored with countless thin, crosshatched scratches that read as a dense tangle of dried grass or straw with no distinct horizon or object. A few faint incised letters sit in the upper left, and a small monogram appears in the lower right corner.
Warm ochre, bronze and touches of near-black dominate the palette, applied thickly then cut back with a sharp tool so lighter ground glows through the scratches. The rough, sun-baked surface and dry crosshatched texture give the piece a quiet, contemplative warmth.
