About this work
A large, rounded leaf shape fills the middle of the canvas, its outline traced by a dark, uneven edge and divided by a pale central rib that runs from top to bottom. The surrounding ground dissolves into soft, blurred patches of grey and cream, suggesting foliage or mist behind the leaf.
Warm ochre and burnt sienna fill the leaf's body against a cooler grey-white surround, applied in thick, blended strokes with softened edges. Light is diffuse and even, and the quiet, close study of a single form gives the painting a contemplative, still mood.
