About this work
A long embankment of pale, whitewashed buildings stretches beneath a heavy, grey-violet sky, its facades and rooftops reduced to loose, sketchy strokes. Below, a dark, still river fills the foreground, with a small boat drifting near the shore as the only clearly legible object in the misty townscape.
The palette stays close to greys, whites and blue-violet, with faint ochre touches on the rooftops. Thick, chalky paint is scratched through with fine dark lines suggesting windows and rigging, while the sky is worked in soft, smeared strokes, giving the whole scene a hazy, hushed, overcast quiet.
