About this work
A single-story whitewashed house with a weathered terracotta tile roof stretches across the middle ground, its facade broken by dark window openings and a doorway where a figure in blue is faintly visible. Behind it rise dense cypress and pine trees and the pale blue-grey silhouettes of distant mountains under a chalky, cloud-streaked sky; a dirt track curves through the foreground.
Paint is applied with a palette knife in thick, ridged strokes that build the roof tiles and foliage into raised texture, using warm ochre, brick-red and olive against cool violet-grey mountains and a bright, sun-bleached sky. The rough, tactile surface and high-key light give the scene a sun-baked, quiet stillness typical of a plein-air study.
