About this work

A layered limestone headland curves around a narrow bay, its base washed by turquoise sea and two jagged rock outcrops rising just offshore. In the foreground a sunlit path winds through red poppies, tall grasses and dense green shrubs, with a slender pine at the water's edge leading the eye toward a pale, hazy horizon.

Thick impasto strokes laid on with a palette knife build the rock faces and foliage in choppy ridges of ochre, grey and green, while the sea is worked in cool teal and white to suggest sunlit ripples. Warm light falls across the cliffs from the right against the cooler blue of the sky, giving the view an open-air freshness.
